Air Brake Compressors

An Air Brake Compressor is a vital component of the braking system in most heavy-duty trucks, commercial vehicles, and buses. This crucial part pressurizes air, which is stored in an air reservoir or tank, providing the power needed to actuate air brakes. Unlike hydraulic brake systems that rely on a fixed supply of fluid, air brake systems use a continuous supply of air, enhancing safety by offering a greater safety margin in the event of a system leak.

How Air Brake Compressors Work:

  • Power Source: Depending on the vehicle, air brake compressors are powered either by a pulley system connected to the engine's crankshaft or directly by the engine's timing gears.

  • Operation & Control: These compressors are controlled by a governor located on the air reservoir. The system turns off when the air pressure reaches 120-125 PSI and turns on when it drops below 100 PSI. A safety valve is installed between the compressor and the reservoir to prevent over-pressurization, which is typically set at 150 PSI to protect the system in case of a governor failure..
